What is level A2?

Level A2, also called intermediate or survival, corresponds to the second step of the CERCL. It is intended for learners who can communicate in simple and predictable everyday situations.

It allows you to:

  • Understand isolated sentences and common expressions related to personal life, work, or concrete needs
  • Communicate in everyday situations: shopping, asking for information, talking about your family, describing your environment
  • Describe simply your education, environment, immediate needs, and daily activities

A1

A2 B1
First communication basics Simple and direct interaction on familiar topics

Autonomy to express complex opinions

Thus, level A2 consolidates the communication foundations acquired in A1 and prepares for linguistic autonomy before moving on to level B1.

What is the purpose of level A2?

By taking French courses at level A2, you will be able to:

  • Talk about your schedule, hobbies, and preferences
  • Order at a restaurant
  • Ask for or give directions
  • Describe your home or family
  • Tell a short past experience (vacation, event)
  • Use the metro, bus, or train

What are the objectives of level A2?

The educational goal of level A2 is simple: develop learners’ ability to understand and use frequent expressions to communicate more naturally in familiar contexts.

At the end of the level, you will be able to:

  • Understand common phrases and expressions used in familiar contexts (work, family, shopping, leisure)
  • Express your needs and opinions clearly and directly
  • Write a short text (announcement, invitation, email)
  • Describe short events (imperfect, near future)
  • Understand simple written materials (restaurant menus, directory pages, recipes)

Level A2 consolidates the foundations acquired in A1 and naturally prepares for progression to level B1, where communication becomes more fluent and precise.

The program of French courses at level A2 is based on all communicative and linguistic skills defined by the Common European Framework.
