The author Jean de La Fontaine, 1621-1695, Member of the French Academy
« To please and teach ». In less than 30 years, the Author wrote a total of 243 fables, initially dedicated to the Sun King’s son, aged 5 when he became King of France.
La Fontaine did not invent the basic material of his Fables; he took it chiefly from the Aesopic tradition and, in the case of the second collection, from the East Asian. He turned these materials into verses. His fables are a masterpiece of French literature.
